La VII región de Chile es la más importante en la producción nacional de ají (Capsicum annuum L. var. longum Sendt.), representando las 2/3 de ésta; de las cuales el 90% se concentra en las localidades de Villa Prat y alrededores,
pertenecientes alas comunas de Sagrada Familia y Curepto respectivamente. Surveys carried on, showed some limitations regarding small farmers, compared to the larger ones, relative to their lower level of escolarity, much
smaller areas of cultivation, lack of sales contracts, and deficient technical support. Both groups of farmers showed production shortcomings such as the use of non certified seeds, inadequate crop rotations, and inadequate knowlage about the types of pests and diseases present in their crops, and their control methods. Marketing channels of hot-peppers for processing, used by small farmers, are somewhat more complex than in the case of bigger producers, due to the intervention of merchant-farmers, that buy from smaller farmers and then resell to the agroindustries, based on a selling contract. The action of the merchantfarmers, diminishes the marketing margin of the small farmers. It was established that there 8 marketing channels for processed hotpepper, from producer to consumer, with different magnitudes of farmer's marketing margins. The most efficient of the latter is when producers sell their fresh hot-pepper to the agroindustries, who in turn, sell the processed hot pepper products to supermarkets. In this case, the marketing margin ranges for farmers between 8.92% and 12.19%; for agroindustries between 47.62% and 63.65%; and
for retailers between 19.74% and 37.1%. The less efficient channel is when the merchant-farmers and wholesalers
