The Lisbon Treaty is a treaty signed in Lisbon, Portugal, by all members of the European Union on December 13, 2007.
The main objective of this treaty is to give legal personality to the European Union to sign international agreements and improve their performance.
Other objectives are the follow: A politician will be chosen to be president of the European Council for two and a half years, replacing the current system where presidency is rotated between member states every six months. It also allows the European Council to change decision making from unanimity to majority voting in a number of areas, excluding military and defence. However such changes will themselves require unanimous decisions.
