In Jonathan Swift’s essay the standing situation is poverty and its consequence in Ireland, for example we can see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags and importuning every passenger for alms. Jonathan shows us the impossibility to the government to solve this problem, which is melancholic to see, the ineptitude of Ireland's politicians, the hypocrisy of the wealthy, the tyranny of the English, and the squalor and degradation in which he sees so many Irish people living.
