Laser Pointer Safety and Site Requirements

Introduction

This Alert provides guidelines for the safe use of laser pointers at the Clinton site. The guidelines are consistent with the ANSI Z136.1 laser classification system and addresse recent instances of on-site use of high power laser pointers which are potentially harmful to eyes.

Background

All laser pointers used on site, must have a classification of 1, 2, or 3R and in the older classification system I, II, IIa, or IIIa. The laser classification can be determined by examining a sticker affixed to all laser devices:
