The reinforced concrete, widely used nowadays in Brazil will be the main target of our approach, due to its importance for the construction and the progress that it has provided. However the picture was not always this. We have no evidence of the date of the appearance of concrete. In the early acceptance of this material was a big problem, only years later, after experiments and success stories, that this picture was reversed. The reasons that led to its acceptance departing from the characteristics of winning large tensile stresses, through the widespread availability of its components, widely found in nature, beyond its ability to assume the most varied forms and their ease of application. Concrete is the second most consumed natural resource in the world, second only to water. It is estimated that annually are consumed 11 billion tons of concrete, which represents, according to the Federación Iberoamericana de Hormigón Premesclado (FIHP), approximately an average consumption of 1.9 tonnes of concrete per person per year, a figure surpassed only by water consumption. In Brazil, the concrete coming out of central metering is around 30 million cubic meters.
Because of its importance and constructive participation in the present, it is deserved to know more about this natural resource.
