This created pressure on Emperor Hirohito who in order to avoid another attack of that caliber declared the Japanese surrender on the 14th of August.

Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States: Harry S. Truman, Containing the Public Messages, Speeches and Statements of the President April 12 to December 31, 1945 (Washington D.C.: United States Government Printing Office, 1961) page 212.

This is a speech made by President Harry S. Truman on the 9th of August, 1945. It was transmitted from the White House to all the American people. Its purpose was to inform the American people about the situation of the war in Europe and to reveal the measures undertaken by the US Government concerning the Pacific War and how the Atomic Bombs had been dropped successfully in Okinawa and Nagasaki. This source has great value since President Truman was the one who made the decision to drop the bombs so in this source we see his reasons to do so. The limitations of this source are that the speech was transmitted after the bombs were dropped so it’s basically a statement of the use of Nuclear Power in Japan. Also, the source is bias because President Truman protects his decision made and doesn’t discuss any other solutions that existed to end the war with Japan.
