we were also interested in the best solution and applications from an industry perspective and in exploring promising scientific development tracks for the near future, A large number of researchers and experts from academia, governments and industry submitted research and application papers for this special Issue and from this pool of papers we tried to select the most relevant ones in the above mentioned contexts.

Based on their objectives and the posed research questions,the papers included in this special issue can be sorted into two distinct categories. Including seven papers, the contributions in the first category propose new AR approaches and outline advanced VR solutions, specifically developed to bring an added value in product solutions, as extensions of CAD /e systems. Our impression has been that this approach, as well as the proposed VR /AR tecnologies, has reached the level of maturity that is sufficient for industrial applications.The three papers in the second category address, in turn, various technical
