During childhood the premature loss of a parent can have a grave effect on a child’s emotional development, identity and self-esteem. Gwen Pharis Ringwood in her one act play, Still Stands the House, demonstrates how this unfortunate event drastically changes the life of the Warren family, especially the character of Hester Warren, sister of Bruce Warren. She spent years caring for her father and brother after her mother’s death finding herself disinherited and bitter particularly when her brother’s wife seeks to sell the old family farm house. When she compares her life with Ruth’s happy and free life, she realizes how big her sacrifice was. After her father dead she was not even included in his will and being disinherited and potentially displaced by Ruth, who she sees as usurper, she cannot contain her bitterness, pain and jealousy which leads her to madness.
After a heavy discussion with Bruce and Hester, Ruth wants to makes them see how life can and should be different for them as a family
