Plant cell and tissue culture: source of foods for the future Abstract
Production of food in quantity and quality enough for the increasing world population is an important challenge for this century. Plant biotechnology has widely proved that generation of transgenic plants producing food and biologically active compounds is the most viable alternative. However, ignorance of basic aspects about this biotechnology and plant biochemistry has led the community to disagree on the consequences of releasing and use of transgenic plants as food resource. With the aim of lighting the knowledge of plant biotechnology and use of transgenic food, in this work the basic aspects of this biotechnology are summarized. The methodology to establish plant cell and tissue cultures is illustrated. The importance of properly selecting the physicochemical and nutritional conditions is discussed, to obtain not only adequate cellular development and biomass production, but also most cells expressing their biosynthetic capacity for economically important substances, as it happens in nature.
